Arianna
Great beginnings are only advantageous when meticulously nurtured. Like resolutions, the ritual of maintaining often fades as soon as the scent of new morphs into familiarity. It's a fact that lacks delicacy, thrusting aside aspirations to reveal challenges to be confronted and hopefully conquered.
In Toronto's thriving restaurant landscape, great starts do not guarantee long-term success. Nothing is guaranteed. To outlast the initial shine and create an identity beyond the buzz, while seizing a part of Toronto's roaring Restaurant scene, is an endorsement of sustenance.
Nearly five months after their debut, Arianna has had a start that suits this scenario. Their attempt at avant-garde Italian cuisine has lived lively, reverberating across the City with a siren-like pull.
Easily seduced, it's where I found myself for yet another Culinary Adventure.
The Setting
Summer was in full flourish, and a heatwave had a vice-like grip on the day. I was longing for Fall, the cooler days and nights seemed ideal, and the streets filled with superior style are always welcomed. I spent the morning and early afternoon at my Hustle, playing Hostess to Toronto’s rich and famous. It’s not an unpleasant Hustle, but it is just that. I watched the morning slither to afternoon and hoped that slither would miraculously turn into a sprint. It didn’t. My excitement is usually at unmatched levels for these culinary adventures, but I was especially enlivened for this encounter. Arianna is the sister Restaurant to Harbour Sixty, a Toronto landmark and a place I’ve never had a bad meal. This affiliation could be pressure for the 5-month-old Arianna, but the buzz around the city has indicated a strong start for a Restaurant in its infancy. Pressure can be a privilege.
The afternoon escalated after 2 pm, and after a few errands, I headed home to get ready for my 5 pm reservation. I picked out a delightful little number for the occasion. A lime-green pleated skirt with a white lace top and white studded stilettos. I was feeling a particular kind of cuteness because three months ago, fitting into this outfit was but a dream.
The 18-minute ride from Midtown to Harbour St was almost seamless, and I arrived despite a few wrong turns from my ride-share driver, without significant incident. After a detour or two, I found my way, four storeys up to Arianna’s entrance. It was 5:02, and I was almost on time for my reservation. After an enthusiastic welcome from a confident Host, I was ushered to a well-lit table as requested. As I attempted to settle into my seat, I slipped and almost landed on the floor. I was a little embarrassed, but was immediately put at ease when the Host quipped,”it’s ok, you’re still here.” We both gave a slight giggle, and I knew I was in good hands. After a warm welcome from my Server, I ordered my customary glass of Prosecco and nestled in for the Arianna experience.
The Space
At a glance, Arianna’s unique room oozes modernity and masculinity. Upon further inspection, there is delicacy to the space. Muted browns and deep reds deliver a warmth and elegance reminiscent of a classic Cigar Lounge. Whimsical lamps line the exterior of the room, while ceilings, although low, are filled with character.
The room is a playground for the eyes. Intricate designs are present in every nook. The lighting is awe-inspiring, most notably a single bulb on every other panel on the ceiling. Panels that run the entity in the room. Porthole windows add dimension, and a cozy Bar with oversized armchairs balances the room. The perfect marriage of classic and elegance, modern and modish!
Here Is What I Had
This delicious start to my meal was compliments of the Chef. In today’s climate, it’s very rare that bread, a once reflexive, complimentary gesture, is offered without a charge. Even in some of the best Italian Restaurants, bread is at a cost. These were perfect partners, fluffy and savoury, enhanced by balance. A very nice gesture to usher in what I expected to be a quality dining experience.
I find most tomato salads irresistible, and this one was no exception. The Chef’s playful and imaginative use of ingredients is brought to life as the sweetness of the tomatoes harmonizes with the richness of the ricotta. The most delicious croutons and cucumbers added a crunch, and walla walla? Wow!
I was craving the comfort of a good Pasta, and the simplicity of this dish spoke to me. Overall, the composition was nice, but I’ve had better Bolognese. There should be balance in a good bolognese, and it was, but it lacked cohesion. There was a nice tart finish on the palate, and the pasta was perfectly cooked. An admirable attempt that lacked perfection.
I love a good Bordeaux, and at the suggestion of my Server, this one was the perfect match for my Main. Beautifully balanced, velvety and voluptuous, medium-bodied with supple textures. A treat!
As a Foodie, I have many guilty pleasures, and potatoes are near the top of the list. I find them alluring, and whenever I encounter them on a Menu, I usually end up ordering them. Most people wouldn’t necessarily match potatoes and pasta, but I didn’t care; these Tuscan beauties sounded too good. I was not disappointed. What a masterpiece! Crispy on the outside with a pillowy texture on the inside, every bite was a bonus. Bursting with bold garlic and rosemary accents, the accompanying sauce was worthy of a chug. So delicious!
This was more than a Cocktail, it was an experience. I was lucky enough to preview this gem before its debut on the Menu. The presentation is gorgeous; in addition to a cocktail glass that's a work of art, it's highlighted by a fresh rose and fresh mint garnish. Before you get too cozy, the base of the glass is sprayed with Bergamot Perfume. The idea is that the essential oils will linger on the hands as you sip on your Cocktail. What fun!
The Service
Service is subjective, and although my experience at Arianna was flawless, I have to mention that for the first time on one of these culinary adventures, my cover was blown. This had me worrying about the authenticity of the experience. I’m not saying that me documenting the experience while not incognito made a difference because everything felt genuine and organic. But there were noticeable differences. I was privy to things the average customer wasn't. I received a preview of an upcoming menu addition and was even offered a tour. All lovely gestures. There was a rhythm to the service, and my Server, a particularly vibesy character, was knowledgeable and had really infectious energy. The meal was well-paced, and all my needs were met. Sparkling service from greet to goodbye!
The Bill
This was a very reasonable culinary adventure. It might be the most equitable one yet. The Menu allows flexibility so you can have a quality dining experience without being excessive. I ordered dishes that were somewhere in the middle in terms of price. Things can get expensive if you're in the mood for a Fish or Meat dish, but the menu offers some sharing dishes if you're a couple or are dining in a group. Like in most fine Italian establishments, there's a great selection of Pastas if you'd like to keep things economical.
I have an appreciation for fine vision, and Arianna's attempt at "a grandeur masterpiece" is setting a standard, successfully. The space is stunning, the food is good, and the atmosphere is lively. If you find yourself Downtown and are in the mood for a modern Italian experience, Arianna is worth a visit.
Arianna is located at 60 Habour St.
Enjoy!
