Liliana
Location is a luxury tied to success. It magnifies moments, merging demographics with destination. At its core are hubs that house a city's heartbeat, creating a tempo that ignites and energizes. The people and places they popularize matter. Their influence may be subtle, but it is far from secondary.
On Queen West, one of Toronto's most stylish corridors, everything is amplified by trends. From real estate to street style, every detail seems touched by spectacle. For restaurants, landing on Queen West, whether strategic or serendipitous, is a calculated move. The strip teems with talent and clever concepts. Success isn't rare, but it is fickle. If there's a formula, it's a melange of factors that pair the neighbourhood's unique makeup with a delicious demand. Enter Liliana.
Positioned on Queen West's edge, Liliana stands out. This Italian-Asian spot blends heartfelt hospitality with a creative menu, making its identity feel distinct rather than familiar. Its modern style bridges tradition and trend, while a warm atmosphere welcomes guests, setting it apart from the expected.
Fascinated by Italian-Asian fusion and craving first-class hospitality, I visited Liliana for a culinary adventure.
The Setting
Every season carries a sentiment. This summer's? A salute to style. The streets have become a catwalk, filled daily with evidence of modish motivations. Though still in its infancy, summer's recurring brilliant days have already put wardrobes to work. From trend-driven to personal expression, there are hardly any missteps. Everyone seems in sync.
Most mornings, I linger over coffee; this one was no different. The influx of style excited me. As the morning unfolded, I wondered what to wear. Next to dining out, dressing up is my favourite pastime, especially when the occasions overlap. I looked to my choice of restaurant for inspiration. Italian chic is always a vibe, and Asian aesthetics can be epic, but to avoid being overdressed, I pivoted. Something closer to home felt right: a newly acquired denim dress. I had to indulge; it's one of the summer's hottest trends. I kept it simple with black wedge sandals and simple silver accessories; my Speedy 35 completed the look.
At 5:15, I found myself at Liliana's door. The trip there was a blur, featuring multiple detours and a nostalgic stroll up Queen West. After a grand greeting, I was shown to my table. It was as requested, well-lit. I surveyed my surroundings and settled in with the menus. For a moment I considered a shift: should I start with a cocktail and end with a prosecco? After a tug-of-war with myself, I decided to stick with tradition. Prosecco. The culinary adventure was underway.
The Space
Liliana's 30-seat room captivates with charm. Queen West's bustle is muted by the warmth of its heritage home. Exposed brick and concrete soften beneath oversized paper lanterns, giving the narrow room a layered, polished feel.
There's a familiarity to the space, a comfort usually reserved for cozy abodes. Stone-topped tables frame the room and lead to an open kitchen, creating a clear, inviting flow.
Here Is What I Had
Wonderfully refreshing with notes of green apples, white flowers, and citrus, this was the perfect way to begin what I hoped would be a memorable meal.
Begin your Liliana experience with the olives. The marinade is complex, aromatic, and savoury, revealing citrus and herbs in every bite. Start here, and let it set the tone.
Bread and balance go hand in hand. Liliana's take on this staple contrasts the toasted crunch of breadsticks with the focaccia's dynamic, chewy interior, giving a simple offering its own character.
As a lady of Jamaican descent, trying any oxtail creation feels like a birthright. Unsurprisingly, this was the highlight of my meal. Oxtail has that effect, curing a craving for great pasta I didn't know I had. The ragu was savoury, rich, and revelatory, with a velvety texture that complemented the delicate pasta. The fresh, bright gremolata balances the dish, helping Liliana's troffie feel unmistakably its own.
Paired with the Troffie, this bold offering, fresh, full, and soft on the palate, was a perfect partner. I especially loved its spicy undertones with the richness of the ragu.
Elegant, well-balanced, and wonderfully unique, this was memorable till the final sip. Floral and refreshing, the vibrant pineapple, crisp cucumber, and delicate violette layered over smooth pisco were divine. The maraschino added a subtle sweetness, while the white tea soy lends a refined savoury finish. The perfect ending to my meal.
The Service
It's gratifying when reputation meets reality and delivers excellence. At Liliana's, the expectation was top-tier hospitality, and I was not disappointed. A greeting with gusto opened the experience; what followed was a well-paced meal, orchestrated by a knowledgeable and pleasant server. Enhanced by a serene setting, the service matched the surroundings.
The Bill
Quality experiences are usually expensive. At Liliana's, although the menu offers some flexibility, expect to pay a $100-per-person minimum. This is on par with the best fine dining restaurants in the city and, after my experience, worth every loonie. The food is exceptional, the location's a gem, and the hospitality top-notch.
