Miss Likklemore's

Caribbean nights are filled with intrigue. Evenings spent sobering up from the sun while grooving to musical greats. It's an intoxicating vibe. One that couples commotion with leisure.

In Toronto, where winters seem boundless, they are coveted. Many escape when affordable, to the lure of the Caribbean Sea. Getting lost in the balmy setting is easy, the lure of spices spectacular, and complaints are limited ordinarily. Replicating nights like these isn't easy but there are a number of Restaurants on the Toronto scene who aim to deliver.

There is something to be said for a restaurant that understands its own identity. Miss Likklemore's does not try to be everything to everyone. It knows what it is — and that clarity is its greatest strength.

The Setting

Mionetto Prosecco Brut

King Street's beckon was welcomed and as I made my way to Miss Likklemore's doors the Caribbean girl in me could hardly maintain my composure. It was a beautiful Spring day. One that had the sun sparkling and that usually sets up unforgettable Caribbean nights. Since there are so few fine-dining Caribbean Restaurants in the City. I've been anxiously anticipating this adventure.

Despite a hiccup or two with my Rideshare, I arrived predictably on time for my reservation. After a warm greeting, I took a moment to survey my surroundings and it was quite the spot. I had requested a nice table and was accommodated at a cozy corner in the hub of the Restaurant. I had studied the Menu at home but sometimes Menus aren't updated online and I have to deviate from my plan. The Menu here was as expected and by the time I was greeted by my Server, I already knew what I would order. I started with my customary glass of Prosecco, and the experience was jovial from the start.

Here Is What I Had

A cocktail at Miss Likklemore's
SALT COD FRITTERS-- red scallion mignonette, charred corn aioli

Salt Cod Fritters is one of my favourite snacks, I make them at home quite often. This take was very impressive. The creamy charred corn aioli was the perfect vehicle for these little pockets of heaven. The salt cod came through perfectly with just the right hint of saltiness while the red scallion mignonette brightened up the finish. A winner.

SLOW BRAISED OXTAIL--spinners, butter beans, crispy shallots, chilli

There is nothing like slow braised oxtail. In my opinion, it's the only way to cook them to get the best results. When done correctly, it falls off the bone and emits that earthy meat flavour we all love. This was a wonderful take. I was tender and full of flavour. My only complaints are the butter beans were kind of absent and the spinners tasted like macaroni. A little disappointing because those were the two ingredients that piqued my interest. My reason? It's how all the women in my family create Oxtail. Despite those things, the dish was delicious.

The main course at Miss Likklemore's
COCUNUT RICE --coconut cream, crispy garlic, lime zest

The trouble with coconut rice is, when done right, you can't stop eating it. This was light, fluffy and fragrant with every grain intact. The coconut cream was present, the crispy garlic was a nice touch and the lime zest brightened up the finish. The was the perfect companion to the Oxtail.

Wine at Miss Likklemore's
Clooney Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon

Chances are if this Clooney Ridge Cab is on your wine list, it's what I'll order. This time it was the partner to Oxtail and it was a great match. I remember to snap a photo with just a few sips left.

Dessert at Miss Likklemore's
RUN RAISIN ICE CREAM

This is my absolute favourite flavour of ice cream, so when I saw this on the menu I had to give it a try. This take was very rummy, which I loved. The raisins were not mixed into the ice cream but were instead sprinkled generously on top. This made it easy to get the right ratio of ice cream to raisins in every bite. So yummy!

SWEETSOP SOUR-- tanqueray gin, sweetsop, lemon, agave, aquafaba, hibiscus rosehip bitters

After dinner, I decided to indulge a little and have a Cocktail. It's been years since I tasted the flavour of sweetsop and this reminded me why I loved it so much as a child. Sweet, lemony with a bitter hint, it was the perfect way to end the meal.

The Service

The Service — professional and friendly

From arrival to departure, the Miss Likklemore's experience was very warm. From the spirited " welcome" at the door to the confident response to my queries at the table, everyone was extremely professional and friendly. My only knock on the experience was, I ordered a five-ounce glass of wine and was served a nine-ounce glass instead. I really didn't notice until the bill arrived. An oversight by me and a mistake by my Server. As far as flaws in the service, that's my only complaint.

The Bill

The bill — a fair accounting of a fine meal.

Designed to share, Miss Likklemore's Menu is best enjoyed if you're dining with others. As a solo diner, there was lots to take home. The portions are decent for the price and the quality is superb. Considering the family-style tag the bill was a bit high for one. if you find yourself on King West with friends, Miss Likklemore's is worth a visit.

Miss Likklemore's is located at 433 King St. W.
