Miznon restaurant — Israeli street food Toronto

November 10, 2023·Culinary Adventure, Elevated Eating, Lady at Lunch

Miznon

The origin of street food spans many lifetimes. A staple on most City streets, this cuisine has many variations. From Hot Dogs to Hash, on a Cart or on Trucks and everything in between, the roads radiate with appetizing morsels that are speedy and satisfying.

Palates all over the Globe rely on tasty tidbits for a fraction of the cost. On the World's busiest streets Menus are diverse, options are plentiful and feeding the masses is a priority. Giving advanced meaning to eating out is easy and every desire may not be satisfied but a purpose is served. In Toronto where street food culture is limited, it's rare to find the diversity of most of the World.

Miznon, a brick-and-mortar in Yorkville, has the City buzzing with their offering of Mediterranean street food. Curious and hungry it's where I found myself for this Month's Culinary Adventure.

The Setting

STRAWBERRY FIELDS -- Gin, elderflower, strawberry perfume, lemon, mint, soda

Fall's beauty mesmerized me; the temperature was unseasonably warm and I was in a state of bliss with the idea of Lunch on the horizon. I usually skip breakfast and Lunches are rare, but I was happy to have scheduled a Lunch amid a busy day. I took the three-minute stroll from my Hustle to Miznon's doors. I had spent the morning working hard but the day was moving at a snail's pace and I was looking forward to a Culinary Adventure to add some spunk to the day.

I entered the Building just a few minutes after opening hoping to beat the Lunch rush. I was welcomed heartily, directed to Menus and offered a seat of my choice. I settled on a spot by the window and took a few minutes to study the Menu. There was no Sparkling wine but a compact Cocktail list I decided to take advantage of to start. The Menu is well-composed with many options for eating on the go. I made my decisions and headed to the counter to order.

The Space

The dining room — compact, energetic, waiting to come alive

From the love letter graffiti on the wall to the charming central Bar, a step into Miznon is a modern marvel. Accented with fresh Vegetables, the simple yet functional layout maximizes every inch of what would ordinarily be considered a cozy space. The room flows very well, each section mimicking the others. Very cohesive!

Here Is What I Had

The pita at Miznon Toronto
RUN-OVER  POTATO-- Baked potato smashed over sour cream, garlic, dill & scallions

What a delicious experience. Don't ask me how to make a baked potato exciting but that was what was achieved here. Creamy and salty undertones was the duo that brought this offering to another level. I felt comforted after every bite.

A BAG OF GOLDEN MEAT-- Overnight brisket and onions seared on hot steel; garlic aioli

Slow-cooked to perfection, this Brisket and Onion combo was the perfect marriage. Thickly sliced chunks of onion complimented the tender bits of Brisket well and as described on the Menu, "overnight" was the appropriate amount of time. The beefy flavour and stewed texture were perfection and although I didn't eat every bite in one sitting, the leftovers made a great late-night snack.

CHOCO-BANANA PITA TRAIL--Carmelized bananas and a taste of childhood in Israel

Anything that's meant to take you to childhood is usually wonderful. This was no exception. Warm and satisfying but not overwhelmingly sweet, this really put a cap on my meal. Carmelized bananas are my new favourite after indulging in this dessert.

The Service

The minimal table service at Miznon keeps the concept focused, but that doesn't mean quality is lacking. Each member of staff I encountered was warm, professional and knowledgeable. Service was timely and the food was excellent. All my needs were met and my suggestions for improvement were minimal.

The Bill

The bill — exceptional value for what was served

This has been my most economical Culinary Adventure to date. Considering the location, this is a shock. Thankfully the concept saved me a few dollars. I must say this was the most expensive street food I've ever consumed but it was also the most delicious. The quality is definitely on the higher end so expect to pay accordingly.

Miznon is the kind of restaurant that earns a permanent place on the rotation — not for special occasions, but for any occasion that calls for food that is honest, bold, and genuinely satisfying.
